For the fall of 2018, I relocated to upstate South Carolina to intern as the Digital Media Coordinator for the athletics program at Wofford College, a small Division I school that sponsors 18 men's and women's sports. As the Digital Media Coordinator, I was responsible for producing all of the digital creative for each of these programs - graphics for each of the teams' social media accounts, various day-to-day assets for coaches and other athletics employees, and video board images for display in the school's athletic facilities. However, of all these sports, I felt my work for the men's and women's basketball teams was the strongest. The following pieces were used for the 2018-2019 season.
Notably, on November 6th, 2018, Wofford Men's Basketball hosted the University of North Carolina Tar Heels for the team's first home game for the 2018-2019 season. The event marked an incredibly rare occasion where a small, mid-major basketball program was given the opportunity to host one of the most storied and iconic college basketball programs in the country. As an indication of the game's prominence, the contest was even broadcasted to a nationwide, primetime audience on ESPN2. The game is largely considered the most important sporting event in the history of Wofford College Athletics. All of the following work was used to promote this historic event.
I spent the majority of my time producing social media graphics that provided followers with real-time information regarding each teams' scheduling, statistics, accolades, and recruitment. To ensure the fastest possible turnaround time for breaking news stories, I created a number of templates with photos and text that could be updated quickly and easily. While the graphics for each sport were unique and distinguishable from one another, they incorporated many of the same typefaces, colors, and textures to achieve a consistent, school-wide aesthetic.
In addition to a prominent social media presence, each program also had a wide variety of other graphic needs. This season, basketball season ticket holders are using this plastic card to attend each game. Its design showcases the entrance to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, a new, state-of-the-art basketball and volleyball facility funded entirely by Jerry Richardson, a Wofford alumnus most notably known as the former owner of the Carolina Panthers.
Given the game's magnitude, the Marketing and Promotions team made a concerted effort to use the event to bring awareness to Wofford Basketball and the school's athletics program as a whole.
I was tasked with creating and submitting a Snapchat geofilter for those looking to share their experience attending the sold-out contest in person. A geofilter is a location-specific image that Snapchat users can choose to superimpose over the top of their photographs and video recordings when using the app on their phones. The geofilter has the same look and feel as many other advertising elements used throughout the 2018-2019 basketball season.
I also designed a number of single color T-shirts to be distributed to students and fans throughout the basketball season. Sharing a likeness to the aforementioned Snapchat geofilter, the white shirt specifically commemorated the Wofford vs. UNC basketball game, and was worn by a large portion of the crowd on national television. The black shirt was handed out for a “Blackout” game later in the year.
Creating graphics for display inside all of Wofford's arenas and stadiums was another important responsibility as Digital Media Coordinator. For the basketball season, I designed material to be shown on Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium's video boards, ribbons, table monitors, and lobby television screens. Daktronics software superimposes live stats over the top of the scoreboard graphics, while other informational graphics play on loop throughout the game. Many of these graphics were also seen on the national TV broadcast of the Wofford vs. University of North Carolina basketball game.
